We produce millions of half-grown hortensias

Situated in the Pays de la Loire, Hortensia France is the largest producer of half-grown hortensias in France. Our product supplies growers all over Europe.

Our specialisations

Specialisation in 1 potsize

At Hortensia France we produce hortensia’s exclusively in a 14cm pot to maximize efficiency and offer the best value to our customers.

High quality cold storage facilities

Hortensia France has over 34.000 cubic meters of cooling facilities to overwinter the entire production – a key element to produce a high quality product.

Specially designed machinery

To ensure the best quality we work with machinery that is specifically designed for the production of hortensias.

How we measure

EC and pH are measured once a week; these figures are used to decide the type and amount of fertiliser to be applied. Scouting for insects is carried out on a weekly basis to assist us in the pest control.

Flowering buds are analysed from the end of August onwards to determine the moment when the plants must be moved into the temperature controlled cold-stores. These production protocols are based on many years of Hydrangea growing experience and the Hydrangea crop is continuously monitored by tracing and tracking.

Our partners

Through its intensive and historical collaborations with the Institute for Research and Seeds (IRHS), Hortensia France works closely together with the main players in greater Angers area concerning plant biology (INRAEAgro Campus, and the university of Angers). Hortensia France is also a member of the Végépolys Vallée which certifies its collaborative research projects. The company’s Research & Development projects are partly subsidized by the Pays de la Loire Region and the European Union. All in all, Hortensia France is doing everything to develop its knowledge of the biology and cultivation methods of hydrangea’s.

Environment

The protection of our employees and the environment is a major concern for us. Since 2008, we have been a certified member of MPS, an international environmental standard for horticultural production, and currently enjoy a level ‘A’ status. To go further, we are also committed to an eco-design approach to carry out the analysis of the production life cycle of our hydrangea’s. This project is led by CNPH-Piverdière with the support of O2m Lab, a research and innovation office in CSR impacts.

Our product range

The fundamental basis for good hydrangea varieties is a sum of several factors.

Experience is one such factor, but there is more. These include:

  • An extensive gene database full of plants with every conceivable characteristic.
  • Thorough knowledge of the material and accurate records.
  • Regular feedback from vendors, so knowledge of market needs.
  • Continuous testing of clones and conducting field trials.
  • Strict selection criteria: no brake dust on seedlings, no branch support, good branching, leaf size and colour, flowering characteristics (shape, colour and fullness), shelf life and susceptibility to powdery mildew.

This results in the assortment below.
